Titre Test for Dogs Australia

5 Hounds Titre Testing Roadshow: The Results

Personalised, evidence-based vaccination decisions for your dog

For decades, pet healthcare has largely followed a one-size-fits-all model. Every dog, regardless of genetics, lifestyle or immune history, was placed on the same vaccination schedule.

Today, we have better tools.

A titre test for dogs measures your individual dog’s protective antibodies, allowing vaccination decisions to be based on data, not assumption.

In our recent testing program, Australia’s first Titre Testing Roadshow, we found 90.9% of all results demonstrated protective immunity (score 3 or higher) , meaning many did not require revaccination.

What Is a Titre Test and What Does It Measure?

A titre test is a simple blood test that measures the level of protective antibodies circulating in your dog’s bloodstream. It tells us whether the immune system is still capable of defending against specific infectious diseases.

At our clinics, we test for the three core canine diseases:

• Canine Parvovirus

• Canine Distemper

• Canine Adenovirus (Hepatitis)

Rather than assuming immunity based on time alone, a titre test provides measurable evidence of protection.

In short: fewer jabs, less stress, and care that’s tailored to your dog.

Why One-Size-Fits-All Pet Healthcare Is Outdated

How Titre Testing Supports Responsible Vaccination

Titre testing does not replace vaccination. It informs it.

If antibody levels are strong and protective, revaccination may not be necessary at that time. If antibody levels are low or non-protective, vaccination is strongly recommended.

This approach allows vaccination when needed, rather than automatically.

Vaccination remains essential for protecting dogs against serious diseases like parvovirus. What has changed is our ability to assess individual immunity rather than relying purely on fixed schedules.

Why Consider a Titre Test Instead of Automatic Revaccination?

The key benefits of titre testing include:

• Individualised healthcare

• Supports a more tailored, evidence-based approach to preventive health

• Avoiding unnecessary medical interventions (or stress for your dog)

• Greater confidence and transparency for owners

• Better long-term immune management

• Reduced risk of adverse vaccine reactions

It puts science and transparency back into preventative care.

Every dog is biologically unique and a titre test gives you clarity specific to your dog.

It’s particularly useful for:

  • Puppies

  • Senior Dogs

  • Dogs with previous vaccine reactions

  • Dogs with immune compromise

  • OWNERS SEEKING DATA DRIVEN DECISIONS

  • Rescue Dogs or Dogs with Unknown Vaccination History

Routine Vaccination

Based on time intervals

Does not assess current immunity

May lead to unnecessary revaccination

Titre Testing

Based on your dog's actual antibody levels

Identifies whether protection is still present

Supports more precise vaccination decisions

What to Typically Expect at Your Dog’s Titre Test Appointment

Is a Titre Test Right for Your Dog?

A titre test for dogs in Australia may be suitable if:

• Your dog has completed their initial vaccination schedule

• You want to check ongoing immunity before revaccinating

• Your dog has previously reacted to vaccines

• You prefer a measured, science led approach to preventative care

Titre testing does not replace veterinary advice and may not be appropriate in all situations.

How Often Does a Dog Need Titre Testing?

For most adult dogs with established immunity, testing every two to three years is often sufficient. However:

• Puppies and young dogs may require more frequent testing initially

• Senior dogs may benefit from closer monitoring

• Immunocompromised dogs may require individualised assessment

Titre testing is valuable for all dogs, but particularly:

• Adult dogs with established vaccine history

• Dogs with sensitivities or chronic illness

• Senior dogs

• Owners seeking personalised, proactive care

Frequently Asked Questions About Titre Testing for Dogs

What is a titre test for dogs?

A titre test for dogs is a blood test that measures the level of antibodies your dog has against core diseases such as parvovirus, distemper, and infectious hepatitis. These antibodies indicate whether your dog still has protective immunity from previous vaccinations.

Instead of automatically revaccinating at set intervals, a titre test provides measurable data about your dog’s current immune status. This allows pet parents and veterinarians to make informed decisions based on evidence rather than assumption.

In Australia, titre testing is increasingly used by pet parents who prefer a personalised and science-led approach to preventative care.

What does a titre test measure in dogs?

A titre test measures circulating antibodies in your dog’s bloodstream. Specifically, it assesses whether antibody levels are high enough to indicate protection against certain core canine diseases.

It does not measure “general immunity” or overall health. It specifically evaluates immune memory related to prior vaccination or exposure.

If antibody levels are above the protective threshold, revaccination may not be necessary at that time. If levels are low or absent, revaccination may be recommended.

Is a titre test for dogs accurate?

Titre testing for core diseases such as parvovirus and distemper is considered highly reliable when conducted through appropriate laboratory analysis.

A positive result, meaning protective antibody levels are detected, is generally accepted as evidence of immunity. A negative or low result indicates that immunity may not be sufficient and revaccination may be advised.

While no diagnostic test is perfect, titre testing is widely recognised as a valid tool in assessing immunity to core canine diseases.

Does a titre test replace vaccination?

A titre test does not “replace” vaccination. It helps determine whether vaccination is currently required.

If your dog has protective antibody levels, revaccination may be unnecessary at that time. If immunity has waned, vaccination may be recommended.

Titre testing supports informed decision-making. It allows vaccination to be administered when needed rather than automatically.

How long does immunity last after vaccination?

Immunity duration varies between individual dogs. Many dogs maintain protective immunity to core diseases for several years after their initial vaccination schedule.

Some dogs retain measurable antibodies for significantly longer than standard annual or triennial schedules suggest. Others may require earlier boosting.

A titre test provides individualised confirmation of whether immunity is still present.

Is a titre test suitable for all dogs?

A titre test for dogs in Australia may be suitable if:

  • Your dog has completed their puppy vaccination schedule
  • You want to assess ongoing immunity before revaccinating
  • Your dog has previously experienced a vaccine reaction
  • Your dog is senior or has health concerns
  • You prefer a measured approach to preventative care

However, titre testing may not be appropriate in every situation. You should consult your veterinarian or with Dr. Will prior to a titre test, if you are unsure whether it is suitable for your dog.

How much does a titre test for dogs cost in Australia?

Typically, a titre test for dogs in Australia can cost anywhere between $140 to $350+, depending on whether your vet uses on-site testing kits (around $140) or sends samples to an external pathology lab, which is typically more expensive.

At 5 Hounds, we want to make titre testing as accessible as possible, which is why at our Titre Testing Roadshow:

  • Eligible active 5 Hounds subscribers can received a free titre test, provided they meet the subscription requirements.
  • For everyone else, the standard appointment fee was $150 per dog.

Again, we would like to emphasise that typical pricing may vary at other veterinary clinics across Australia.

Are titre tests accepted by boarding kennels in Australia?

Acceptance policies vary between boarding kennels, training facilities, and local councils.

Many facilities now accept documented titre test results showing protective antibody levels in place of routine revaccination. However, policies are determined by each individual provider.

If you require titre testing for boarding purposes, confirm directly with your chosen facility beforehand.

How long does it take to get results?

Results timeframes depend on the laboratory processing schedule. At the 5 Hounds Titre Testing Roadshow, you will be advised on expected turnaround times at your appointment - which we hope to be within 7 days.

Once available, results will be explained clearly so you understand what they mean for your dog’s vaccination planning.

Is the blood test painful or stressful for dogs?

A titre test involves collecting a small blood sample, similar to routine veterinary blood collection.

The process is quick and minimally invasive, and most dogs tolerate it well. Clinics are structured to minimise stress, and appointment numbers are limited to allow adequate time for each dog.

Why would someone choose a titre test instead of automatic revaccination?

Some pet parents prefer to measure first rather than assume. A titre test provides objective data about existing immunity.

For dogs with a history of vaccine sensitivity, for senior dogs, or for owners seeking a personalised approach, titre testing offers clarity.

It allows decisions to be based on measurable immune response rather than fixed time intervals.
